eBay Pre-Listing Shipping & Profit Margin Calculator

US Domestic edition — figure out how much profit margin you actually have before you list, based on package size, estimated shipping cost, and eBay fees.

This tool helps you check the gap between what you charge the buyer for shipping and what you actually pay to ship, before you list an item on eBay.

Enter your packed dimensions and weight to get a rough shipping estimate, then compare Free Shipping / Buyer Pays Shipping / Partial Absorption to see which makes sense.

This is a US-domestic-only tool: US-based seller shipping to a US-based buyer. No cross-border fees, no currency conversion — everything is in USD.

Always confirm your actual shipping cost with USPS, UPS, or FedEx before finalizing your listing. This tool is for rough pre-listing planning only.

Input

Weigh the item after it's packed in its box, not just the item alone.

Selecting a category fills in the fee rate below. You can still edit it manually.

Enter 0, or 2.0% or higher. The default is 0% (no promotion). eBay’s minimum ad rate is 2% — below that, the listing stays active but is no longer promoted (no ad cost, but no effect either).

Rule of thumb: $0.30 if price + shipping received is $10 or under, otherwise $0.40. You can override this.

Packaging materials, labels, etc.

Treated as $0 automatically when Free Shipping is selected.

If you've already checked a real rate on USPS.com, UPS.com, or FedEx.com, enter it here.

About this tool

This edition assumes a US-based seller shipping to a US-based buyer (domestic transaction) — the same basic structure as a same-country marketplace sale. There's no cross-border fee and no currency conversion; everything stays in USD.

Shipping estimate basis (2026 rate basis): a rough USPS Ground Advantage / Priority Mail-territory placeholder — this free domestic edition doesn't need the FedEx/DHL/UPS international benchmark used in the paid Pro/UK/AU/Asia editions, since there's no cross-border leg here. Always confirm your real rate before finalizing a listing. A "2027 rate basis" edition will follow future carrier rate revisions.

Small item example

A rough example for something like wireless earbuds or another small electronics accessory — one of the fastest-moving categories on eBay's US market right now, along with sneakers and trading cards.

Packed box around 7 × 5 × 3 in, actual weight around 0.6 lb, shipping charged to buyer around $6.

Why check shipping before you list

It's easy to sell an item and realize afterward that shipping ate your entire margin. Checking shipping setup and profit margin before listing helps you avoid that.

Shipping received vs. shipping paid

What you charge the buyer for shipping counts as revenue (and is subject to eBay's final value fee). What you actually pay the carrier is a cost. These are two different numbers.

"Free shipping" doesn't make shipping free

Setting free shipping just means the buyer pays $0 for shipping — you still pay the carrier. Make sure your item price can absorb that cost.

What this tool tells you

  • Whether you're losing money on shipping
  • Whether you still have profit after fees
  • Whether your box is oversized for the item
  • How much to charge for shipping
  • Whether free shipping is realistic
  • Whether partial absorption makes sense

What this tool does NOT tell you

  • Your official shipping rate
  • Whether the carrier can actually deliver it
  • eBay's latest official fee changes
  • Whether the item will actually sell

Categories that need extra care for new sellers

Authentication requirements, condition disclosure, claims handling, and fees add extra complexity. Consider starting elsewhere unless you already know these categories well.
